Inclusion and Identity – The What Really Matters Podcast

πŸŽ™οΈ In this episode of the What Really Matters – Panel Discussions podcast, we bring together voices from youth work, education, community organisations and lived experience to explore what inclusion really means, how identity shapes our experiences, and what needs to change to ensure young people and communities genuinely feel seen, heard and valued.

From representation and belonging to inequality, education and access to opportunities, this honest discussion challenges the idea that simply inviting people into existing spaces is enough. Instead, the panel asks whether we need to go further β€” sharing power, valuing lived experience and creating systems with communities rather than simply for them.

We also explore the importance of relationships and trusted adults, how trauma and unmet needs can be misunderstood as challenging behaviour, and why grassroots organisations and community leaders are often uniquely placed to reach people that larger systems struggle to engage.

We explore:

β€’ The difference between inclusion, equality and genuine equity.

β€’ Why representation and lived experience matter when decisions are being made.

β€’ The importance of giving communities real influence rather than simply consulting them.

β€’ How identity, belonging and intersectionality shape people’s experiences.

β€’ Why grassroots organisations need greater trust, investment and opportunities to lead.

β€’ Education, exclusion and how trauma can sometimes be misunderstood as challenging behaviour.

β€’ The importance of trusted adults, positive role models and relationships in young people’s lives.

β€’ Social media, masculinity and the influences shaping young people’s identities.

β€’ Why creating genuine inclusion can require organisations and individuals to share power and take risks.

β€’ The pressures facing people working in communities and the importance of supporting those who continually support others.

πŸŽ“ A thought-provoking conversation about inclusion, identity, equity and what it really means to create spaces where young people and communities feel they genuinely belong.

πŸ’₯ A raw and insightful discussion about representation, power, relationships and why meaningful inclusion requires more than policies, programmes or a seat at the table.
